Javelin-Pilum – The javelin was a basic missile hurled at enemies from a distance. The Greek javelin had a basic wooden shaft with a sharp iron head. The Roman javelin, or Pilum, (plural, Pila) had a long, soft iron head which, when it hit the enemy, would hopefully pierce through the shield and hit the soldier behind. Or, it would stick in the shield, then bend, making the shield exceedingly heavy, weighing it down and making the shield practically useless. If the javelin hit the ground it would also bend, and could not be thrown back – a useful feature in warfare!
